One of these events the performance of Gustav Holsts opus "The planets" played by the Rundfunkorchester of the HR was presented in the context of the Kirchentag at the Festhalle Frankfurt.</p> <p>The central aim of this classical concert was to use modern up to date lighting equipment to complement the music. We were commissioned by Crystal Sound to create a theatre lighting concept for the 17 by 27 metres stage.</p> <p>Between 1914 and 1917 Gustav Holst composed "The planets" according to the astrological properties of the solar system. The in parts calm and in other parts powerful themes make this visionary and mystical piece to an unique experience. Holst gave each planet its own charakter and this meant that the lighting had to offer 7 different moods. All these parts acted separately from each other and therefore did not follow the usual classic "One theme - one look" pattern.</p> <p>The lighting was based on two different concepts. We gave each planet its own look by using projection and colour - the ideas for these themes derived from Holsts own subtitels. The sometimes very striking use of patterns and gobos should stimulate the audiences phantasies and present the piece in a modern and radical way.</p> <p>Our second aim was to highlight the orchestra and to emphasize all musical accents. Manfred Voss used the back and sidewalls as well as the orchstra itself as a reflection and lighting source as it was not necessary to reach a shadow-free TV lighting situation.</p> <p>We tried a totally unusual approach concerning the key-light. 28 Mac 600 washlights were placed as loors in front of stage and on both sides in the wings. These fixtures were attached to booms at about 2.5 metres above stage level. This way of side-lighting the orchestra created a manifold effect that could not have been achieved by classic lighting concepts.</p> <p>This is the equipment we used: 22 x Martin PAL FX scanner with individual gobos to project patterns and objects, 40 x Martin MAC 600 movinglight for colour washes, 13 x 6-Bar CP62 for 3 different full stage washes in red, peacock and blue in various combinations, 5 ACL Bars to create distinctive beams, 12 Fresnels 2 kW, 10 Fresnels 1 kW aund 5 Profiles 575 W. The Fresnels and profiles were mainly used to light the orchestra.</p> <p>We used 18 identical gobos for each planet-theme. These gobos were projected on to the back and side walls of the stage.
